Aleksei Talisainen is an Estonian computer scientist and educational technology researcher. He is affiliated with Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech) as an early stage researcher at the IT College and teaches/works in areas including cybersecurity and technology-enhanced learning.
Education
Talisainen completed a Bachelor of Science in electronics and biomedical engineering at Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech) in 2004, followed by a Master of Science in biomedical technology from the same institution in 2007. He subsequently transitioned into information technology and education-related research, and is listed in the Estonian Research Information System (ETIS) as a doctoral candidate in recent years, affiliated with TalTech's IT College.
Career and Research
Talisainen is based at TalTech's IT College, where he works as an early stage researcher and is involved in teaching and research activities spanning cybersecurity and technology-enhanced learning. His academic trajectory reflects a shift from biomedical engineering toward the intersection of educational technology and information systems.
Telepresence Robotics and Remote Learning
A significant portion of Talisainen's published research concerns the use of telepresence robots (TPRs) in remote teaching and learning environments. In 2024, he co-authored a study published in Applied Sciences that conducted a comparative analysis of the video performance and camera capabilities of telepresence robots for remote teaching and learning contexts. He is also a co-author of a pilot study on keeping distance with a telepresence robot, published in Frontiers in Education in 2023, which examined practical applications of TPRs in educational settings.
Talisainen has additionally participated in the ReSTELA project, where TalTech lists him as a project participant. In that capacity, he presented a lab prototype and a telepresence robot at a project meeting.
Cybersecurity Outreach
Talisainen contributed to research on the CyberPin initiative, known in Estonian as KüberNööpnõel, a program aimed at recognizing young cybersecurity talent. He is a co-author of a paper on this initiative published in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series by Springer, as part of the HCI for Cybersecurity, Privacy and Trust proceedings in 2021.
Industrial Property
Beyond his academic research, ETIS lists Talisainen as an inventor or co-inventor on industrial property related to medical technology. Specifically, this concerns UV-detector arrangements for photometric sensors used in kidney replacement therapy, reflecting his earlier background in biomedical engineering.
Selected Publications
Talisainen's peer-reviewed output includes work in Applied Sciences, Frontiers in Education, and Springer's Lecture Notes in Computer Science series. His publications reflect collaborative research with colleagues at TalTech and related institutions, addressing both the technical evaluation of educational robotics and the broader challenge of identifying and nurturing cybersecurity competencies in young learners.
