Jean-Bernard Condat

Early Life

Jean-Bernard Condat was born in 1963 in Béziers, Hérault, France. He completed the baccalauréat at the age of 16, an early indication of academic aptitude, before enrolling at the University of Lyon to study musicology, where he earned his DEUG.

Career

Around 1982, Condat began working with the Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DST), an intelligence agency within the French National Police. Operating under the hacker handle concombre (English: cucumber), he was placed by the DST in strategic positions within emerging computer networks, including serving as a sysop for CompuServe.

In 1989, acting under instruction from the DST and agent Jean-Luc Delacour, Condat established the Chaos Computer Club France (CCCF). Despite its name suggesting an affiliation with the well-known German Chaos Computer Club, the CCCF was in fact a fictitious organization created specifically to investigate and surveil the French hacker community. The group also cooperated with the National Gendarmerie in its operations.

Notable Work

The CCCF published an electronic magazine called Chaos Digest (ChaosD), issued under ISSN 1244-4901. Between January 4, 1993, and August 5, 1993, seventy-three issues of the publication were released, giving the organization a visible and credible presence within hacker circles.

Through his dual role as a prominent figure in the French hacking scene and a covert DST asset, Condat achieved recognition as one of the best-known French hackers of the 1990s. He subsequently worked as a consultant to the DST.

Publications

Prior to his most prominent intelligence-related activities, Condat edited an academic volume titled Nombre d'or et musique (Golden Section and Music), published by Peter Lang GmbH in 1988, reflecting his earlier academic background in musicology.
