Johannes Ullrich
Computer security expert
Johannes Ullrich is the Dean of Research for SANS Technology Institute, a SANS Faculty Fellow, and founder of the SANS Internet Storm Center (DShield), a global network security community. In 2004, Johannes was recognized as one of the Top 50 Most Powerful People in Networking by Network World Magazine.
Background
Johannes Ullrich grew up in East Germany before relocating to the United States, where he pursued advanced academic study. He earned a Ph.D. in physics from the University at Albany, with research focused on x-ray optics. That work attracted funding from both NASA and the Department of Energy through a number of research grants. He also contributed a chapter to the Handbook of Optics, a recognized reference work in the field.
Career in Information Security
Ullrich transitioned from physics research into the information security field, where he became affiliated with the SANS Institute. He serves as Dean of Research for the SANS Technology Institute and holds the title of SANS Faculty Fellow. In these roles, he has been involved in security education, research, and community outreach at an institutional level.
Internet Storm Center and DShield
Ullrich is the founder of the SANS Internet Storm Center, also known as DShield, a global network security community. The Internet Storm Center functions as a cooperative monitoring system, aggregating data from contributors worldwide to track and analyze internet threats, unusual traffic patterns, and emerging attack activity. The project has become a widely referenced resource within the network security community.
Recognition
In 2004, Network World magazine named Ullrich one of the Top 50 Most Powerful People in Networking, citing his influence on internet security monitoring. In 2018, he received the Information Systems Security Association (ISSA) President's Award for Public Service, recognizing his contributions to the broader security community.
