He is also a member of the Chaos Computer Club (CCC), Europe's largest association of hackers. In 2021, Sehnaoui started an acting career by featuring in the TV mini series The Role and the TV series Al Hayba.

Early Life and Education

Khalil Sehnaoui was born on 23 May 1975 in Beirut, Lebanon, to Marwan Sehnaoui and Mouna Bassili Sehnaoui. His father serves as President of the Lebanese Order of Malta, and his mother is a painter active in the Middle East. Sehnaoui grew up dividing his time between Paris, France, and Beirut, Lebanon. He attended Collège Stanislas in Paris and Collège Louise Wegman in Beirut. He subsequently earned a Bachelor of Arts in Management from Université Saint Joseph in Beirut, followed by a Master's degree in Economics.

Career

Sehnaoui co-founded and serves as managing partner of Krypton Security, a Beirut-based information security firm. The company focuses on testing organizations' security strengths, weaknesses, and potential vulnerabilities. Prior to establishing Krypton Security, he made efforts to improve patient representation within the Lebanese insurance industry.

Sehnaoui is a member of the Chaos Computer Club (CCC), Europe's largest association of hackers. He is frequently called upon by media organizations to comment on information security matters, particularly as they relate to the Middle East. In April 2016, he was listed among the top 100 influencers in information security in an online industry report.

Notable Work and Media Appearances

In 2015, Sehnaoui was featured in The Guardian's video series "The Power of Privacy," which examined privacy risks in the digital age. That same year, he identified that Silent Circle's warrant canary had been removed from the company's website, drawing attention to the implications for user privacy.

In 2017, Sehnaoui appeared on National Geographic's series Breakthrough, produced by Ron Howard and Brian Grazer. Season 2, Episode 2, titled "Cyber-Terror," followed white-hat hackers — including Jayson Street, Darren Kitchen, and Sehnaoui — who combine technical skills with social engineering techniques. Also in 2017, Sehnaoui attracted widespread attention on social media after tweeting about registering a domain name belonging to a business idea he overheard loud and rude customers discussing in a coffee shop. The incident was covered by Mashable, among other outlets.

In 2019, Sehnaoui was included among 70 information security professionals featured in Tribe of Hackers, a book collecting career and industry insights from cybersecurity practitioners. The book reached the number one spot for new releases on Amazon in the computer security and encryption category.

Sehnaoui also played a role in debunking claims, circulated in early 2016 by counter-terrorism firm Ghost Security Group and subsequently reported by Newsweek, Fortune, and TechCrunch, that the Islamic State had developed an Android application called Alrawi for encrypted communications. Sehnaoui was among the security specialists who demonstrated the app was not a genuine tool.

Television and Acting

In 2021, Sehnaoui began an acting career, appearing in the TV mini-series The Role and the TV series Al Hayba.

Controversies

In July 2018, Sehnaoui was arrested in Lebanon on allegations of piracy targeting several Lebanese companies and government institutions. He was released after questioning, and no charges were brought against him. Observers noted that his detention was complicated by a legal vacuum in Lebanese law regarding cybercrime.
