Brendan Hannigan
Technology entrepreneur
Brendan Hannigan is cofounder and CEO of Sonrai Security and entrepreneur partner at Polaris Partners. He is a former head of International Business Machines (IBM) Security Systems Division, chairman of Twistlock and CEO of Q1 Labs. He is also an entrepreneur and an investor who focuses on security, cloud, and software as a service (SaaS) startups.
Early Life and Education
Brendan Hannigan was born in Ireland, where he completed a BSc in Computer Science at University College Dublin in 1987. During his studies, he developed an interest in technology through exposure to FORTRAN programming on a VAX computer architecture, an experience that shaped the direction of his professional career. He immigrated to the United States in the early 1990s, initially settling in Boston, Massachusetts.
Early Career
Hannigan began his professional life in Ireland working for Digital Equipment, where his responsibilities included writing terminal server and routing code. After relocating to the United States, he joined Motorola as a software engineer before moving on to Wellfleet Communications. From 1996 to 2000, he served as Director of Network Research at Forrester Research, where he developed expertise in enterprise networks, security technology, and product management.
Q1 Labs and IBM
Hannigan became widely recognized in the security industry as President and CEO of Q1 Labs, a company that provided security intelligence software capable of analyzing and monitoring events across enterprise environments. The company's flagship QRadar product was considered compatible with IBM's existing portfolio and central to its broader security strategy. IBM acquired Q1 Labs in 2011.
Following the acquisition, IBM established a new division — IBM Security — built on the foundation of Q1 Labs, and Hannigan was appointed to lead it. Under his leadership, the division grew significantly; Gartner identified it as the third largest enterprise security software company, and IDC listed the group as a world leader in security services. IBM continued to expand the division through further startup acquisitions during this period. Hannigan retired from IBM in 2016 after four years with the company.
Sonrai Security and Polaris Partners
In November 2016, Hannigan joined Polaris Partners as an entrepreneur partner, focusing on identifying and funding technology startups in the areas of cloud infrastructure and cybersecurity. In 2019, he co-founded Sonrai Security and assumed the role of CEO. The company helps organizations enforce least-privilege access across multi-cloud environments by analyzing permission usage and continuously blocking unnecessary risk. Its Cloud Permissions Firewall dynamically enforces cloud-native, policy-based controls on cloud permissions in real time, aiming to reduce over-privilege without disrupting developer or operational workflows. Sonrai Security raised over $88 million in funding.
Philosophy and Focus
Hannigan has publicly argued that traditional perimeter-based security models are insufficient against sophisticated threat actors, advocating instead for security approaches that operate closer to data, individuals, and transactions. He has also emphasized the broader industry shift away from traditional data centers toward multi-cloud service environments as a defining challenge for enterprise security.
