Jim Browning (YouTuber)
Northern Irish YouTube personality and scam baiter
Jim Browning is the Internet alias of a software engineer and YouTuber from Northern Ireland whose content focuses on scam baiting and investigating call centres engaging in fraudulent activities. Browning cooperates with other YouTubers and law enforcement when they seek his expertise in investigating and infiltrating scam call centres. Browning has published several journalistic exposé videos highlighting the results of his investigations.
Background
Jim Browning is the internet alias of a software engineer and YouTuber based in Northern Ireland. His focus on scam baiting began after a relative lost money to a technical support scam, prompting him to research fraudulent operations and eventually launch a YouTube channel to upload footage intended as evidence for authorities.
Scam-Baiting Methodology
Browning has been described as the "godfather" of scambusting. His primary technique involves reverse-engineering scams: when scammers attempt to connect to his computer using remote desktop software, he turns the access against them, gaining entry to their own systems. Through this method, he has infiltrated over 3,000 scam call centres and made thousands of documented "saves" by intercepting active scam calls and warning victims in real time.
His investigations have targeted operations in which scammers pose as technical support experts or impersonate US IRS agents, using remote desktop software and social engineering to defraud victims. Such schemes have included unsolicited calls offering computer services and websites impersonating companies such as Dell and Microsoft.
Notable Investigations
BBC Panorama — Gurugram Operation (2020)
In March 2020, Browning was featured in an episode of the BBC documentary series Panorama, in which he and fellow YouTuber Karl Rock infiltrated a large-scale technical support scamming operation based in Gurugram, Haryana, India. The pair recorded drone and CCTV footage of the facility and gathered evidence linking alleged scammer Amit Chauhan — who also operated a fraudulent travel agency called Faremart Travels — to scams targeting elderly and computer-illiterate people in the United Kingdom and United States. Chauhan denied the allegations in a phone interview with the BBC. He was subsequently arrested along with his accountant Sumit Kumar in a raid by Delhi Police, though on 2 May 2022 Chauhan was acquitted of all charges at a court hearing in Gurugram.
Glitter Bomb Operation with Mark Rober (2021)
In March 2021, Browning collaborated with YouTuber Mark Rober to construct and distribute automated glitter bombs designed to identify and report money mules who were receiving scam proceeds via shipping services such as FedEx before forwarding the funds to scammers.
New York Times Coverage — Kolkata Refund Scam (2021)
A 2021 New York Times article documented Browning's confrontation with a small-scale refund scam operation based in Kolkata, India. The piece described a December 2019 operation during which Browning intercepted a refund scam targeting an elderly woman whose computer was locked by the scammer after she grew suspicious. Browning was able to contact the woman and help her regain access to her computer.
Dubai Pig Butchering Investigation (2024)
In March 2024, Browning collaborated with an insider whistleblower to expose a large-scale pig butchering scam operation in Dubai operating under the business identity "YOMIGT." The operation allegedly employed migrant workers from Africa and Southeast Asia whose passports were confiscated by operators. Approximately six weeks after Browning published his findings, Dubai Police conducted a raid resulting in the arrest of over 2,000 individuals, described as one of the largest scam busts at a single location in history.
Television Work
In 2022, the BBC commissioned Scam Interceptors, a television series for BBC One presented by Rav Wilding. The show features Browning and a team of white hat hackers working to intercept criminals and prevent fraudulent activity. The first series premiered on 4 April 2022, and the second on 1 May 2023.
Channel Deletion Incident
On 26 July 2021, Browning's own YouTube channel was temporarily deleted after scammers impersonating YouTube support staff used an authenticated phishing email sent from a google.com domain via Google Chat to convince him to delete the channel under the pretense of migrating it to a new brand account. The channel was reinstated four days later.
Recognition
Browning's work has been covered by major outlets including the New York Times, the BBC, and Time magazine. The April 2021 issue of AARP Bulletin featured an 11-page article centered on his efforts to combat cyber scams, written by the director of AARP's Washington state office.
